CALAIS, Maine — Washington County Community College’s Outdoor Adventure Center and the Calais Rod and Gun Club will sponsor an Ice Fishing Derby on Feb. 28 at the Calais Rod and Gun Club on Round Pond in Charlotte.
The festivities begin with a Fisherman and Spectator’s Breakfast at the clubhouse.
The derby begins at 7 a.m. and the prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m.
Prizes include three tagged pickerel worth $300, $150, and $50. If no winning fish is caught, a random drawing for $100 will be held.
Tickets are $10 each or $20 for immediate family and must be purchased in advance or by 7 a.m. on derby day.
Advance ticket sales are available at Calais Ace Hardware, Blueberry Ford in Machias, McLaughlin’s Exxon in Baileyville, Newcomb’s Gun & Saddle in Perry, Johnson’s True Value in Calais and at Washington County Community College’s Business Office or Outdoor Adventure Center.
Refreshments will be available all day at the clubhouse.
The fishing derby is the second major event sponsored by the OAC this winter.
A winter family fun day was offered at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 24. About 100 people participated in the cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter ecology workshops.
Directions from Calais: Travel north on U.S. Route 1, 1 mile past the rotary take the first left onto the Charlotte Road. Travel on the Charlotte Road for approximately 6 miles. The clubhouse will be on your left directly across from the Round Pond Boat Landing.

Ski museum programs scheduled
Ski enthusiasts and history buffs may want to check out a pair of events that the Ski Museum of Maine will present in the coming days.
Tuesday, the museum will host a digital slideshow titled “Schuss-Boom and Schuss-Bust: Fast-Paced Growth and Face-Plants of Maine Skiing, 1945-Present.” The museum, which is located at 109 Church Street, will open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7.
The photos depict the many ski areas, large and small, that sprung up in Maine in the decades following World War II.
On Feb. 15, the Ski Heritage Classic, which will benefit the Ski Museum of Maine, will be held at Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley.
At 2 p.m., the Vintage Ski and Clothing On-Snow Expo will be held. The public is invited to dress in classic clothing and display their old skis on The Landing. Participants will share stories of the artifacts, a group photo will be taken at 3 p.m., and a Vintage Ski & Clothing Parade will be held at 3:30 p.m.
A reception, including a silent auction and a live auction, will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Sugarloaf Inn.
In addition, the museum’s traveling display will be located in the Sugarloaf base lodge on Feb. 14-15 from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
