LAKELAND, Fla. – Goldie M. Johnson, 88, passed away Friday, March 6, 2009, at Good Shepherd Hospice, Lakeland, Fla., after a bout with cancer. She was born March 23, 1920, in Cherryfield, as the first born and only girl to Blanche Eleanor (Dorr), daughter of Eliza Tenan and Melvin Dorr, and Maurice Stanley Morse, son of Roxie Connors and Edmund Owen Morse. She attended schools in Cherryfield and graduated from Cherryfield Academy in 1936, at the age of 16, as valedictorian of her class. She then attended the Maine School of Commerce, now Husson University, Bangor. She became an employee of American Peat Co., where she set up their bookkeeping system and managed their office. This is where she met Frederick Adolph Johnson, born Feb. 5, 1919, in New Sweden, who had been hired in the capacity of an interpreter for the Swedish millwright installation supervisor who could not speak English. Goldie and Frederick were married, Feb. 15, 1939, and lived in Cherryfield with her parents until the birth of her son, Lance Herman, Aug. 10, 1939. After that they moved to New Sweden and shortly after moved into an apartment in Caribou. She took a part-time job with L.D. Bearce Oil Co. until the birth of their daughter, Lucinda Marice, Jan. 21, 1942, who is now deceased. She then took a job at Caribou Production Credit and Federal Land Bank offices, Caribou, which she held for 10 years. Subsequently she took a position as comtroller of Beaver Brook Farm’s group of companies, which she held until June 1, 1984. She was active in the community and a member and past president of the Women’s Auxiliary of H. P. Pratt Jr. No. 15 Post of the American Legion. Goldie and Frederick were active members of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden. After about six years of being a so-called snowbird, Goldie and Frederick bought a home in the Schalamar Creek Golf Club Community, Lakeland, Fla., in 1990 and it became their adopted community. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Gerald, and Galen; her husband; and daughter, Lucinda Hebert. She is survived by her son, Lance H. and his wife, Lillian, of Portland, Ore.; son-in-law, Athill Hebert of Caribou; seven grandchildren, Lori Weber and husband, Mark, Lance Jarl Johnson and wife, Michele, and Erin Wernli, all of Portland Ore., Miles Hebert and wife, Lisa, of Gahanna, Ohio, Logan Hebert of Boynton Beach, Fla., Seth Hebert and wife, Angie, of Bangor and Dr. Hannah Yamin and husband, Jay, of Worcester, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren, Cassie Weber, Dilan and Ayden Hebert, Weston, Camden and Mackenzie Hebert. At Goldie’s request, there will be no visiting hours. Services and interment will be in Maine at a later date.
