MARSHFIELD and PRESQUE ISLE – Chester E. Payne went to be with his Lord, March 6, 2009, at his home in Marshfield with his family present. He was born Aug. 22, 1918, in Butte, Mont., but grew up in New York state. He arrived in Presque Isle in 1941 to work in civil service at Presque Isle Air Force Base. Shortly after arriving in Presque Isle, he met the love of his life, Lillian (Brewer) Payne and they were married for 63 years. Chester worked for Presque Isle Ice Co. until the company closed in the late ’50s and then for auto salvage yard on Chapman Road until he retired. He and Lillian moved to Marshfield in 1997 to be near their only child, Nancy and son-in-law, Brian Ingalls. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, five brothers and one sister. In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, he is survived by his grandson, Chester Leighton and wife, Carolyn; stepgrandsons, Daren Hoffman and wife, Brenda, Shawn Ingalls and fianc?e, Denise Wood, Jason Ingalls and fiancee, Brandy Beal; great-granddaughter, Samantha Floyd; great-stepgranddaughters, Heather Wray and family and Sienna Ingalls; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be missed by many friends and extended family. There will be a celebration of his life 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at the home of Billie Ingalls, 21 Elm St., Machias. A graveside service in Presque Isle will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name may be made to Centre Street Congregational Church, UCC, Attn: Green Space, P.O.
