MACHIAS – Dorothy Haskell Nickerson joined her husband, Richard, in heaven March 29, 2009, after a very short illness. Dorothy “Dot” was born July 28, 1919, in Ellsworth, the first daughter of Henry and Alta Haskell. She graduated from Stockton Springs High School and went to work in Portland at a laundry service. She met and married Richard B. Nickerson Jan. 2, 1949, in Stockton Springs. Richard was a Navy career man and she traveled the world with him. She had many fond memories of Washington, D.C., Bermuda and San Diego, and her happiest times were spent in Hawaii. They bought a home in Jacksonville in the early 1970s. While there, she became a very active member in both local and state Granges. Dot and Dick were on the State Grange Youth Committee from 1977 to 1985. Dot was junior deputy from 1985 to 1990 and 1993 to 2002. During these same years, she was also deputy for both Washington and West Washington Pomana’s, covering all of Washington County. Dot served as ceres and CWA chairperson for Jacksonville Grange from 1977 to 2002, except for one year. Her duties included organizing suppers and public dinners, as well as all the sewing competitions at local and county levels. Dot was predeceased by her sisters, Olive Smally and Anita Heilsberg; her brother-in-law, Don Smalley; her husband, Richard; and nephew, Reed Smalley. She is survived by brother-in-laws, Carl Heilsberg of Marshfield, and David Hamilton and wife, Cherisse, of Belfast; sister-in-law, Deborah Paradis of Belfast; nephews, David Smalley and wife, Denise, of Manchester, N.H., Mark and Carol Smalley and family of Sacramento, Calif.; nieces, Carol Heilsberg and fianc?, Dave, of Re Bluff, Calif., Janette and William Lynds and family of Anson, Lyneta and Keith Lewia and family of Wilton; several great-nephews and great-nieces. The family expresses much appreciation for the loving care given to Dot at Marshall Care Center, Machias. A celebration of Dot’s life will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Jacksonville Methodist Church. Interment will be later at Jacksonville Cemetery.
