GREENVILLE and ORONO – “Howard” Pritham, M.D., 94, died peacefully April 30, 2009, at an Orono health care facility. He was born June 11, 1914, in Greenville, the son of Fred J. Pritham, M.D., and Sarah R. (Ring) Pritham. Howard was a graduate of Greenville High School, attended Colby College and obtained his medical degree at Tufts Medical School in 1940. He served as a physician in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart for a shrapnel wound. He practiced in Brunswick and Greenville as a physician and then worked 22 years as a physician in the Panama Canal Zone from 1949 to 1975. Upon his retirement Howard and his wife, Lenore, moved back to Greenville. Howard kept busy with his woodworking hobby making canoe paddles, snowshoes, pack baskets and building seven cedar canoes. He also took up snowmobiling to complement his fishing and hunting. He is survived by his first wife, Dorothy Van Arsdale of Winter Park, Fla.; seven children, Howard G. Pritham, M.D., and his wife, Ellen, of Sugar Hill, N.H., Merrill Pritham and her husband, Richard Gibson, of Fort Meyers, Fla., Frederick J. Pritham of Greenville, Charles H. Pritham of Alacua, Fla., Andrew J. Pritham and his wife, Sharon, of Houston, Sarah L. Pritham of Stockton, Calif., and Robin M. Pritham, M.D., and his wife, Ursula of Bangor; 10 grandchildren, David, Gregory, Ellen Jean, Nicole, Christina, Sasha, Sarah, Alex, Megan and Ryan; and seven great-grandchildren, Dillon, Hannah, Tristan, Wilder, Henry, Lila and Remy. Howard was predeceased by his second wife, Lenore; and his brother, Carroll Fred. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Greenville Cemetery, Greenville.
