MADISON – Paul K. Patterson, 91, died May 2, 2009, after a long illness, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta, where he had resided for the past two years. He was born Dec. 20, 1917, in Willimantic, son of Lynwood and Maude D. (Davis) Patterson. Paul was educated in the schools of Guilford and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, with a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry. After graduation, he joined the Air Force during World War II and served as a navigator flying missions from the U.S. to Europe. After his service, he married Helen London of Milo in 1943, and went to work for Great Northern Paper Co. His first wife, Helen, died in 1964. He married Janice “Jan” McMinn, Jan. 5, 1966, and remained at work for Great Northern for a total of 35 years before retiring as Woodlands manager. The couple resided in Bangor and Millinocket until his retirement, when they moved to Florida and then North Carolina. Paul and Jan spent many good years together, canoeing, golfing and at camp. In his younger years, he was an experienced hunter, woodsman and fisherman, spending much time in the North Woods. He was known as an avid conservationist, always following the fish and game laws. In his later years, he and Jan enjoyed much golf together in Florida and North Carolina. He was a contributor to the Cole Transportation Museum, Bangor and for many years was keeper of the snowroller, now on display in the Monson Museum. Paul is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jan Patterson of Madison; three sons, Robert Patterson and wife, Penny, of Greenville, David Patterson and friend, Cindy, of Monson, and Richard Patterson of California; two stepsons, Thomas Atkins and his wife, Diana, of Madison, and Edward Atkins of Apex, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Jane Hawksley of Chicago; a grandson, Robert Allen Patterson and wife, Stephanie, of Massachusetts; two great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Jason Robert; three nieces and three nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife; his brother, Neil Patterson; and sister-in-law, Faye Patterson. At Paul’s request, there will be no funeral or visitation hours. A graveside service will be held at a time to be announced by the family. Friends wishing may make donations in his memory to the charity of your choice.
