OLYMPIA, Wash. – Sid Skiffington passed away May 7, 2009, at an Olympia, Wash., nursing home. He was born in September 1922, in Guilford, and made his home with aunt and uncle, John and Nell Hill. Sid graduated from Guilford High School and went to the University of Maine for freshman year on a track scholarship. The Army called him into service before he could finish his bachelor’s degree. He was taken as a prisoner of war at the Normandy invasion and was held at Stalag III-C for 15 months. Sid was a member of the Army Band, 83rd Division, and enjoyed the company of guys from Big Bands, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Harry James and the Boston Symphony. “Skiff” married Patt Chase of Dover-Foxcroft, in September 1945. They had two sons. Skiff had an interesting life. He taught high school in Fort Kent for five years before joining the U.S. Border Patrol as an immigration supervisor for 33 years. In retirement, he worked for Autec – Navy, West Palm Beach, Fla. He and Patt lived in Florida for 20 years before moving to Olympia, Wash., in 2000. Skiff belonged to the Maine Blue Knights motorcycle club, Lions Club as president, American Legion and the Christmas Town Ex-Prisoner of War chapter in Olympia, Wash. Skiff is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patt; sons, Alec and Susan of Orlando, Fla., and John and Melissa of Olympia, Wash.; three grandchildren, Jason, Sarah, and Robert and Brandi, all of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Lloyd Skiffington and Celia of Ashland, Mass.; and one brother-in-law, Wallace Hewett and wife, Elizabeth (Warren) Hewett of Venice, Fla. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, at Mills and Mills Funeral Home, Tumwater, Wash.
