CUMBERLAND – Jane G. Van Dyk McMahon passed away May 30, 2009. She was born Oct. 4, 1916, in Orange, N.J., daughter of Meint and Nellie Verheyen Van Dyk. She attended school in Bangor, and graduated from Bangor High School in 1934 and Beal’s Business College in 1936. She began working for the Social Security Administration, Baltimore, in 1940 and transferred to the Social Security Office, Bangor, in 1946. She married George Nelson McMahon, Nov. 15, 1949, in Brewer. After living in Burlington, Vt., for many years, they returned to Maine in 1976. She and her husband spent many winters in Florida, and they enjoyed traveling. Her favorite times were spent with her children and grandchildren at home, on holidays and on vacations. Mrs. McMahon was very proud of her Dutch ancestry, visited Holland several times and was in close contact with her cousins there. Her Dutch breakfast served every Christmas morning was and continues to be a much-loved family tradition. For many years she was active in the Girl Scouts of America, first as a young girl in Bangor, then working at Camp Natarswi, Millinocket, and finally, in Vermont as a troop leader for her daughters. Later, after she returned to Maine, she volunteered as a tour guide at Longfellow House, Portland, and also at Prince Memorial Library, Cumberland. She was predeceased by her husband, George in 2006; and two sisters, Gertrude (Van Dyk) Bowden and Rita (Van Dyk) Knowles. Mrs. McMahon is survived by her three daughters, Mary J. Gulezian and her husband, Dean, of Cumberland, Anne M. Coleman and her husband, Tim, of South Berwick and Ellen J. Mazuzan and her husband, Chris, of Falmouth; and her six grandchildren, Peter M. Gulezian of San Francisco, Rachel A. Gulezian of Cumberland, Meredith A. Coleman of Celebration, Fla., Elizabeth M. Coleman of South Berwick, Kirk L. Mazuzan and his wife, Erika, of Cumberland and Scott N. Mazuzan of Portland. She is also survived by her brother, John Van Dyk of Saratoga, N.Y.; her sister, Martha Savage of North Carolina; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service noon June 3 at Mount Hope Cemetery, 1048 State St., Bangor. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.
