MILLINOCKET – Sherman Medford Elkins Sr., 84, beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, died June 6, 2009, after a brief illness. Sherman was born July 26, 1924, in Palmyra, the son of (Joseph) Lee and Alma Elkins. For 66 years, he was married to his best friend, Emma E. Elkins. Sherman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed in the South Pacific aboard the USS McDermut. Sherman was happiest when he was hunting and fishing; no fish was too big or any deer too elusive. Family vacations were often fishing trips into the woods of Maine. Many of the family’s fondest memories were of times spent around a campfire after having a meal of the day’s catch. Sherman is survived by his son, Harry Elkins and his love, Karen Beale, of Cocoa, Fla.; his daughter, Debra Wilkins and her husband, David, of Crystal; his daughter-in-law, Letha Elkins of Fort Fairfield; grandchildren, Betty Elkins of Detroit, Angela Salley and her love, Charles Dunton, of Pittsfield, Catherine Ramee and her husband, David, of Troy, Patricia Green and her husband, Dan, of Worcester, Mass., Robert Paris and his wife, Monique, of Alfred, Mark Elkins of Fort Fairfield, Rye Elkins of Albuquerque, N.M., Caitlin Elkins of Bangor, Bria Bourque and her husband, Brad, of Sanford, Megan Dubois and her husband, Shawn, of Windham, and Devon Wilkins of Portland. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Christian, Ricky, Justin and Joseph Elston, Amanda and Scott Salley, Corey Cayford and Alexis Ramee, and Anna Bourque; great-great-granddaughter, Ayla Elston of Utah; his brother, Philip Elkins and his wife, Bell, of Pittsfield; sister, Carolyn Preble of East Corinth; sister-in-law, Betty Elkins of College Park, Md.; two special nieces, Jane Bonenfant of Ellsworth and Arlene Nelson of Bangor; and special friends, David and Nancy Streams of Millinocket. Sherman was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Emma; his sons, Sherman Jr., Randolph and Kevin; his brothers, Errol, Elmore and Floyd; and sisters, Evelyn Kennedy, Eugenia Butler, Imogene Tweety and Ruth Raymond. The family thanks Madigan Home Health Care, Tiffany Guertin and Millinocket Regional Hospital staff for all the kindness and love shown Sherman during his illness. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at Pittsfield Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield.
