ELLSWORTH – Rachel E. (Haynes) Hutchins passed away four days prior to her 91st birthday, Sept. 5, 2009, with her loving family by her side in Ellsworth. She was born Sept. 9, 1918, the daughter of Harry and Inez (Smith) Haynes of Ellsworth. Rachel graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1936. She worked as deputy city clerk to the city manager, at Ellsworth High School, the Maine State Highway Department and Maine Employment Security. From 1961 to her retirement in 1976, she was secretary to the president at Liberty National Bank, now Key Bank. She married Lester E. Bragdon in 1946 and was later married for several years to Milton A. Hutchins. Rachel enjoyed quilting, making teddy bears and other cherished gifts for family before her vision became impaired. Rachel also enjoyed cooking for family, playing cards, caring for her grandchildren and trying her luck at the slot machines, which she was able to play on her 90th birthday. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are her four children: son, Wayne Bragdon; daughters, Linda Mason and companion, Neil McKay, Judy Tucker and companion, Michael DiGangi, all of Ellsworth, and Mary Wood and husband, Peter Wood, of Yarmouth. She will be dearly missed by her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Stephanie Harris and children, Rachel and Spencer; Timothy Mason and companion, Tara Hart, and their daughters, Taylor and Tanner; Julee Gibson and husband, Jeremy, and their sons, Brian and Teddy; Nicholas Wood and wife, Stacey, and their son, Brycen; Jeremy Tucker and wife, Karen, and their daughter, Tessa; Jay Tucker and his daughter, Macie; Jyl Tucker and Jennifer Tucker. Rachel is also survived by her sister, Sylvia Macy; numerous nieces and nephews; and a beloved friend, Rosa West. She was predeceased by her first husband, Lester E. Bragdon; and two brothers, Harvard and John. A reception and calling hours will be held 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Private interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
