GLENBURN – William Rockwell “Bill” Newberry, 66, died unexpectedly Sept. 14, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 20, 1943, in Hartford, Conn., son of the late Robert Cassius and Eleanor (Kasche) Newberry. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, Dec. 28, 1962, serving proudly for almost 22 years, reaching the position of weather superintendent and retiring July 1, 1982. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with six oak leaf clusters, and numerous other awards and commendations. Bill was 3rd Weather Wing NCO of the Year, 1979; and Griffiss Air Force Base NCO of the quarter, 1975. After retirement from the Air Force, he relocated to Maine where he built homes throughout the state with his father-in-law, specializing in log homes. Eventually he semi-retired and continued to build with his son, Mike. In recent years, he achieved the rank of executive senior manager as an independent distributor with Eco-Quest International in a joint business effort with his wife. Bill was a former Cub Master Pack 50, Rome, N.Y.; and president of Rome National Little League, Rome, N.Y. He was also Kiwanis chapter president and two-year division lieutenant governor, Kiwanis Hixson Fellow and Red Jacket recipient. Bill was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member and ranger of Rocky Knoll Country Club and Bangor Breakfast BNI. He was an avid golfer in his retirement and enjoyed several golf trips with his son-in-law. Bill enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his grandchildren. He maintained his interest in weather forecasting throughout his life and continued to keep detailed records of his climate observations. Bill was an official weather watcher for a local TV station. Surviving are his wife, Jane S. (Webster) Newberry of Glenburn; two sons, William and his wife, Annette Newberry, of Standish and their children, Elizabeth and Jackson, and Mike Newberry of Glenburn and his son, Michael; one daughter, Dorothy Darois and her husband, Bradley, of Ava, N.Y., and their children, Alexandria, Mathew, Kyle, Danielle, Nicolette and Victoria; a great-grandson, Boston; two brothers, Robert Newberry and wife, Theresa, of Windham and Charles Stewart of Manchester, Conn.; many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A graveside service with military honors will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Ohio Street, Bangor.
