BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Rita Silver died Sept. 18, 2009, at her home. A gifted violinist, she had lived a full and rich life. Born in Russia, Rita lived most of her young life in Riga, Latvia, where her father had a music conservatory. At age 3, she was given a small violin, which became her passion in life. Because of her excellence in music, she was awarded a scholarship to New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, in 1928. Proficient in many languages, she had but a limited knowledge of English; however, that did not deter her from coming to America and graduating from this prestigious school. Upon completing her studies in 1932, she was advised by her parents against returning home because anti-Semitism was rampant. Through mutual friends, she was introduced to her future husband, Abraham Silver of Bangor, to where she subsequently moved. They had two sons, Howard and Milton. In 1940 she joined Bangor Symphony Orchestra and performed with them for 41 years until she retired and moved with her husband to Kern City, Bakersfield, Calif., where she continued to play for her own pleasure, as well as for private groups. Her father not only encouraged her musical talent he exhorted her to walk long distances in order to enjoy a long and healthy life. A petite lady with a beehive hair-do and pink umbrella was a familiar sight to residents in Southwest Bakersfield, Calif. A vegetarian for 60 years, Rita maintained that that, along with her love of music and her daily walking regiment, kept her young. Rita is survived by her son, Howard and his wife, Ann; along with five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. We will remember this gracious lady who blessed us with her cheerful demeanor, reflective perhaps of the days when she danced around her home to her favorite gypsy music. We are so deeply grateful to Evelyn Castellon, Christine Gollehon and Dianna Searcy of Alternative Care for their compassionate care of Rita throughout the past 12 years. We also want to acknowledge the staff of Hoffmann Hospice, who provided comfort and medical needs, treating Rita just like family. Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at Home of Peace, Union Cemetery, King and Potomac streets, Bakersfield, Calif. No flowers please. Donations in her memory may be made to Congregation B’nai Jacob, 600 17th St., Bakersfield, CA 93301. Doughty-Calhoun-O’Meara Funeral Directors.
