ELIOT and KITTERY – Harold J. Rollins Sr., 92, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at York Hospital, York. Mr. Rollins was born July 5, 1917, in York, son of the late Edward and Gladys (Smith) Rollins. Mr. Rollins attended local schools and was a graduate of Eliot High School. After high school Mr. Rollins served an apprenticeship at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In 1945, he was drafted into U.S. Navy and proudly served his country until being honorably discharged. Mr. Rollins then resumed his career at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that spanned more than 34 years. He retired from the shipyard in 1969 as head of the pattern shop. Mr. Rollins led an active life. He and Shirley, his beloved wife, enjoyed 63 years of marriage until her death in 1999. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and woodworking. He also enjoyed tending to his gardens in his younger years, and for many years he wintered in Lakeland, Fla., with his wife, Shirley. Mr. Rollins was a member of Naval Masonic Lodge No. 184 for more than 65 years, Royal Arch Chapter 73 Maine Council No. 7, Kora Temple Shrine of Lewiston, American Legion, NRA, and was a lifelong member of York Golf and Tennis Club. Mr. Rollins was predeceased by his wife, Edith “Shirley” (Goodwin) Rollins; two sisters, Elizabeth Perkins and Evelyn Peabody; and five brothers, Anthony Rollins, Norman Rollins, Everett Rollins, Edward Rollins and Herbert Rollins. Surviving are his children, Harold “Jerry” Rollins Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Dexter, Conrad Rollins and his wife, Vicki, of Parkman, and Constance “Connie” Lombardi and her husband, Dick, of Quincy, Mass.; grandchildren, Craig Rollins, Vicki O’Brien, Richard Lombardi Jr., Michelle Hooper, Michael Lombardi and Conrad “JR” Rollins Jr.; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Ethel Hubbard, Lena Morse and Madeline Huntress; a brother, William Rollins; and a special niece, Carla Robinson. A period of visitation for Mr. Rollins will be held 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27. Burial will be immediately after the service at Brooks Memorial Park Cemetery, Eliot. After the burial there will be a time of refreshment at the home of William and Carla Robinson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Rollins’ name to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
