HULLS COVE – Ellen Mary (Higgins) Emery, 71, died Oct. 8, 2009, at Hulls Cove. She was born Dec. 1, 1937, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Robert Law and Johanna “Josephine” (Kelley) Higgins. Ellen attended Saint Edwards Grammar School, Bar Harbor. She graduated from Bar Harbor High School, Class of 1957; and attended St. Joseph’s College, Portland, where she joined the Sisters of Mercy for two years before returning to Bar Harbor. She was a descendant of the original settlers of Mount Desert Island, then Eden. Ellen was employed at Hatch’s Grocery until she met and married John Emery. They raised three children, Johanna, Nancy and Thomas “Tom.” She volunteered at Conners-Emerson School, in Jane Holloway’s third grade classroom for 13 years. Ellen enjoyed traveling and she and John traveled frequently all across the U.S. and Canada, from Hawaii to Newfoundland, Europe and most frequently Walt Disney World. She also enjoyed annual fall foliage trips through New Hampshire and Vermont. Ellen served on several boards and committees for many non-profit and special interest groups. The John and Ellen Emery Science Grant was established to promote and insure a quality science education for all the youth of Mount Desert Island. Ellen was a lifetime member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Bar Harbor. She is survived by her three children, Johanna R. Pasha, Nancy E. Graves and her husband, Keith, all of Bar Harbor. and Thomas J. Emery and his wife, Natalie, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jarrod C. Pasha, Aidan J. Pasha, Oksana K. Graves, Eric A. Graves, Tess O. Graves, Rowan C. Emery and Stella I. Emery; two brothers, Liston P. Higgins of Ellsworth and Leo M. Higgins of Bar Harbor; one sister, Jesse Anne Morris of Presque Isle; brother-in-law, Dale Morris; sister-in-law, Joanne Higgins; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Tasha Higgins and a special nephew, Tim Higgins; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She will also be sadly missed by her friend, Jane Holloway; all her friends at Mount Desert Island YMCA, Island Connections, The Chart Room and Mama DiMatteo’s. Ellen was predeceased by her husband, John J. Emery; and three brothers, infant brother, Terrance Joseph Higgins, Robert Law Higgins Jr. and Royal “Butch” Higgins. Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor, with the rosary beginning 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Bar Harbor, with Father John O’Hara, celebrant. Interment will be at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor. After the interment a reception will be held at Ellen’s house, 58 Lookout Point Road, Bar Harbor.
