FORT KENT – Mr. Albert Leonard Sylvain, 87, died Oct. 9, 2009, at a Fort Kent health care facility. He was born April 13, 1922, in Daigle, the son Denis and Alvine (Morneault) Sylvain. Leonard served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 101st Airborne Division; he made 13 parachute jumps. While in the service he attended the University of Toledo as part of his training. Leonard and his brother, Aurel, were co-owners of Sylvain Brothers Manufacturing Co. for more than 40 years, where they manufactured, invented and patented potato-handling equipment, which they sold. He worked in this capacity until his retirement in 1988. Leonard enjoyed golfing, riding his motorcycle, getting his pilots license and flying his own plane. He also liked camping, fishing and he was always tinkering to find new inventions. Leonard was a member of VFW Lozier O’Grady Post No. 9609, American Legion Martin-Klein Post No. 133 and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 0352, all of Fort Kent. Leonard is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Joan T. (Blanchette) Sylvain of Fort Kent; many nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his siblings, Edwin Sylvain, Anne Sanchez, Irene Cyr, Aurel Sylvain, Sister Annette Sylvain, Yvette Charette, Jeanne Chasse, Norman Sylvain, Theresa Sylvain, Helen Sylvain and Joel Sylvain. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Burial with full military and Knights of Columbus honors will be afterward at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Wallagrass.
