BELFAST – Richard Gordon Smith died Oct. 18, 2009, at Maine Medical Center, Portland. He was born Jan. 9, 1944, in Englewood, N.J., the son of Harold W. Smith Jr. and Frances Westervelt Smith. Richard moved with his family to Hancock, N.H., at the age of 10. He attended schools in Peterborough, N.H., and graduated from The Hotchkiss School, Rutgers University and Suffolk Law School. He was a member of the American Bar Association, New Hampshire Bar Association and New Hampshire Trial Lawyers Association, and was admitted to practice in the Federal District Court of New Hampshire and the United States Supreme Court. His legal career began as a government-paid lawyer, providing legal services to the poor in Keene, N.H., after which he had offices in Peterborough, N.H., Jaffrey, N.H., Rindge, N.H., and Keene, N.H. He was a member of the board of directors of Phoenix House, Dublin, N.H., taught criminal justice to law enforcement officers at Franklin Pierce University and was active in the Lawyer’s Assistance Program in New Hampshire and Maine. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Giants and Boston Red Sox. Richard is survived by his wife, Caroline “Vicki” Tarbell Smith of Belfast; his daughters, Stephanie Alysse Smith of South Portland and Lindsey McFarland and her husband, Sean and their son, Rio, of Healdsburg, Calif.; son, Travis Fullmer Smith of Keene, N.H.; niece, Katherine Guimond of Colorado; and nephew, John Guimond of New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Nancy Smith Guimond. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at St. Margaret’s Church, 95 Court St., Belfast.
