ARLINGTON, Va. – George W. Putnam, died Aug. 6, 2009, at his home in Arlington County, Va. He was born in Fort Fairfield, the son of George W. and Rae B. (Merrithew) Putnam. He was a retired Army major general who was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and held command positions with North Atlantic Treaty Organization and a cavalry unit in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, J. Glenn Putnam of Pennsylvania; four stepchildren, Philip Mahine of New York, Leslie MacCallum, Jeanne Duffie and Vincent A. Guerin, all of Virginia; one brother, David M. Putnam of California; one sister, Barbara M. Burnham and her husband, Beverly, of Old Town; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Dr. James M. Putnam, in 2005. A military funeral will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, in Arlington, Va.
