BAR HARBOR – Helen Mona Longton, 95, died Oct. 24, 2009, at a Mount Desert Island hospital. She was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Clarence and Mona (Goss) Smith. Helen graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1932. In her younger years she worked in many of the local offices. She was a lifelong member of St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor. She enjoyed her Thursday card group very much and was an avid Celtic fan. Helen is survived by three daughters, Jane L. Burch, Gale Abbott and husband, Tom, all of Bar Harbor, and Patti Walto and husband, Peter, of Ava, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Michelle Souza, Chris Joy, Kaitlen Griffin and Bodie Abbott; and three great-grandchildren, Aidan and twins, Derek and Dylan Joy. Helen loved her three brothers, Merrill, Donald and wife, Joan, and Kenneth Smith, all of Bar Harbor. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, William H. Longton; a sister, Elizabeth Johnson; a brother, Clarence “Caddy” Smith; and son-in-law, Arthur Burch. Graveside memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor, with the Rev. Dr. Sandra Reed officiating.
