WOODLAND and BANGOR – Frank Arthur Glidden Jr., 80, went to pitch for the Lord’s team, Oct. 31, 2009. He was born July 2, 1929, in Woodland, the son of Frank A. Sr. and Jeanette I. (Craig) Glidden. Frank graduated from Woodland High School, Class of 1948. He was recruited by Boston Red Sox as a pitcher. In 1949, he signed with the New York Giants baseball team where he played for a couple years. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, retiring as master sergeant in 1969. Frank worked as a postal clerk in Bangor, Portland and Waterville, retiring after 16 years of service. He enjoyed working on his computer and feeding his squirrels. Frank will be remembered for his extraordinary sense of humor and wit and he was very astute to public policy and politics and was up on his current events. He researched his genealogy and found many interesting details. Frank was an avid coin collector. More than anything Frank was an amazing father and husband and was devoted to his family, and thoroughly loved his time with his granddaughters. He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Nancy (Letteney) Glidden; a daughter, Cynthia Glidden and husband, Timothy Staples, of Portland; stepsons, Steven Grant and wife, Leni, of Gray and Scott Grant of Lake Ridge, Va.; two stepgranddaughters, Alena and Leandra; two sisters, Gloria Grant of Hudson and Marilyn McQuade of Marshfield, Mass.; a brother, Richard Glidden and wife, Dorothy, of Calais; several nieces and nephews and many friends. A funeral service with military honors will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
