NEWPORT – Jane Maki Wiggin, registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, died at a Bangor hospital at the age of 50. She had lived with a brain tumor for 18 years, to which she eventually succumbed Nov. 7, 2009. Jane was born April 29, 1959, in Laurium, Mich., daughter of Donald and Edna (Grant) Maki. She graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1977, after which she joined the Army. While in the Army she met and married the love of her life, Stephen Wiggin, Dec. 16, 1978, in the Navy Chapel in Washington, D.C. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1979, she went to nursing school on the GI Bill. She graduated from the University of Southern Maine School of Nursing, summa cum laude, in 1993. She was elected to Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Theta Tau. Jane had many different nursing positions throughout her career, as her husband’s career required several moves to different states. She always readily found a job in the nearest hospital, nursing home or clinic. The Wiggin family always made friends in their local Assembly of God Church, no matter where they lived. Jane had a big love of children and they seemed to flock to her. She was a Sunday school teacher and worked as a leader in Missionettes – an Assemblies program for girls of all ages. She also worked in several vacation Bible schools. Whatever church Jane attended, she was always involved in the children’s programs whether it be teaching Sunday school, Missionettes or vacation Bible school. Jane was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Matt and Esther Salo of Ironwood, Mich.; maternal grandfather, Kenneth Grant of Bergland, Mich.; and her father, Sgt. Donald Maki, of the Michigan State Police, also of Bergland, Mich. Survivors, in addition to her husband, Stephen of Newport, are her sons, Dan of Gorham and Jim of Bangor; her mother, Edna Caramella and stepfather, Mario, of Bergland, Mich.; a brother, Don and sister-in-law, Colleen Maki, of Barryton, Mich.; sister, Ann Maki of St. Joseph, Mich.; sister, Brenda and brother-in-law, Ron O’Brien, of Williamston, Mich.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elliot and Methyl Wiggin of Norway, Maine; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Steven Killam of Wilton; sister-in-law, Cathy May of Lewiston; and assorted nieces and nephews. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport. Funeral service will be held noon Nov. 11 at Cornerstone Assembly of God, Windham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jane’s memory to Community Health & Counseling Services Hospice, 42 Cedar St., Bangor, ME 04401 or Mission of Mercy, P.O.
