HAMPDEN – Alice Trerice Pier, 83, died Nov. 15, 2009, surrounded by her sister, children and their spouses, and grandchildren at home. Alice was daughter of the late Ellen (Sheldon) Trerice and Earnest Trerice. Alice was a member of the Nurse Cadet Corps during World War II and graduated with a registered nurse degree from Grace Hospital, Detroit, in 1947. Her work life included working as the assistant director of nurses at Pontiac General Hospital, setting up the first cardiac and intensive care units at Seaway Hospital, Trenton, Mich., and in later years working as a hospice nurse. Alice had an active life with the churches in her life, including most recently at Atlanta Church of Christ and Standish Episcopal Church, Michigan, and Hampden Congregational Church, having served on church boards, as a senior warden and deacon, and Sunday school teacher and in numerous other positions within these churches. Since 2000 she was very actively involved in Hampden Food Cupboard and helped prepare the monthly chicken dinners for Hampden Congregational Church. She also helped organize the monthly Christian Women’s League luncheons in Bangor and participated in a weekly Bible study group that met once at her home after illness prevented her from leaving her residence. Alice was well known for her willingness to volunteer and help others. Alice’s first son, John Range, was born in 1949 in Yokohama, Japan, where his father was based in the Navy. Her daughter, Linda Range Turner, and younger son, William “Bill” Range, were born in 1951 and 1953 respectively, in West Branch, Mich., near Lucerne, where Alice lived in a cabin in the woods that lacked indoor plumbing and running water. The family moved to Trenton, Mich., in 1955. Alice returned to nursing on an individual basis when her children were young and then to Riverside and Seaway hospitals. Alice retired from Seaway Hospital, remarried and moved to Atlanta, Mich., in 1976. In 1992 after her husband, Elmer was deceased, she moved to Standish, Mich., to live near her son, Bill and his family. In 2000 she moved to Maine to live with her daughter, Linda. Alice is survived by her brother, John Trerice and his wife, Millie, of Sebastian, Fla.; her sister, Elline Sheldon of Whitmore Lake, Mich.; son, John Range of Berkeley, Calif.; son, Bill Range and his wife, Pat, of Port Townsend, Wash.; daughter, Linda Turner and her husband, Ron, of Hampden; as well as her grandchildren, Andy Turner, Ellen Range, Jack Range and Natalie Range; nieces, Mary Trerice and Joanne Sheldon; and nephews, John Trerice and Mike Sheldon. Also surviving are Alice’s stepdaughter from her second marriage, Annette (Pier) Karafa and her husband, Joe; grandchildren, Alan Karafa and his wife, Holly, and Angie (Karafa) and husband, John Valchine; and great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Jonathon. Her husband, Elmer “Mick” Pier predeceased her in 1992. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Hampden Congregational Church. Services in Standish, Mich., will be held on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hampden Congregational Church, 101 Main Road North, Hampden, ME 04444.
