BROOKS – Shirley M. Mulcahey, 82, passed away Nov. 26, 2009, with her family by her side at Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast. She was a woman of incredible strength, who despite struggling with a debilitating illness maintained her sense of humor and never gave up. Born Aug. 26, 1927, in Hampden, to Roscoe and Mildred Libby, Shirley grew up in Brooks with a brother, Richard; and a sister, Beverly. She graduated from Morse Memorial High School, Brooks, and Husson College, Bangor. Shirley was an athlete excelling at both softball and basketball. While a student at Husson College, she scored 213 points in one season to help her team win 19 of 20 games. In 1990 she was inducted into the Husson College Sports Hall of Fame for her efforts. In 1952 Shirley was married to Dan “Jimmy” Mulcahey of Brooks while he was home on leave from the U.S. Army. Together they set off on a lifelong adventure traveling the country, raising two daughters and enjoying life. Shirley enjoyed softball, golfing, bowling and gardening. But most of all she was a devoted mother who enjoyed spending time with her girls. She was a wonderful cook who made everything from scratch, including the best chocolate chip cookies ever. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Dan “Jimmy” Mulcahey of Brooks; two daughters, Jamie Mulcahey of Etna and Dawn Mulcahey and her partner, Craig Worthley, of Hallowell; a sister, Beverly Stubbs of Belfast; several nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents and brother. The family thanks Waldo County Hospice, Kno-Wal-Lin Home Health Care, Brooks Rescue and the staff at Waldo County General Hospital for their compassion and kindness. At Shirley’s request, there will be no funeral service. A gathering for family and friends will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Varney Building, Brooks. Interment will be in the spring at Kenney Cemetery, Brooks. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
