BANGOR – James E. “Jerry” Varney, 80, died unexpectedly Nov. 20, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 18, 2009, in Bangor, the son of Lee M. and Louise M. (Flanagan) Varney. James worked at the Bangor Daily News for a number of years. He enjoyed playing golf, and collecting coins and baseball cards. He loved everything about sports, particularly college football and Major League Baseball. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and Yankees fan for most of his life. He also was a fan of the Boston Red Sox. James was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor. Surviving are one sister, Jeannette Chatelain and her husband, Donald, of Waldorf, Md., nieces, Patty Zegowitz, Michelle Riordan and Donna Johnson, and a nephew, Michael Chatelain; sister-in-law, June Varney of Fort Myers, Fla., nephews, Richard and John Varney, and nieces, Nancy Rennigero and Lisa Gamachi; sister-in-law, Claire Varney of Bedford, N.H., nephew, Tommy Varney, and niece, Sue Devine; many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth and Mary Varney; and two brothers, Richard and Willard ‘Buddy’ Varney. He will be remembered fondly by his dear friends, Linda and Leonard “Skip” Murphy of Orrington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
