ELLSWORTH – Kathleen Mae Karst, 83, died Jan. 15, 2010, at an Ellsworth health care facility. She was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Ellsworth Falls, the daughter of Charles and Madore (Gott) Witham. She attended Ellsworth elementary schools and graduated from high school in Springfield, Vt., in 1944. She married Kenneth H. Karst, in 1948, and lived in Ellsworth Falls. She worked for Willey’s clothing store before they moved to Machias, where they lived for a year. Kathleen worked as a crossing guard for the Ellsworth school system for 24 years. She was a member of Union Congregational Church of Ellsworth Falls, UCC, where she served as a deacon, choir member, president of Mother’s Club and served on the stewardship committee. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star, serving as worthy matron, grand representative to the state of Ohio and held four of five Star Points. Kathleen is survived by her beloved husband of almost 62 years, Kenneth of Ellsworth; son, Kerry Karst and fiancee, Julie Tufts, of Brewer; and a granddaughter, Ashley Karst of Montana. Calling hours will be held 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Spring interment will be at Brookside Cemetery, Mount Desert.
