PENOBSCOT – John T. Perkins, 91, passed away March 1, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Oct. 9, 1918, in Boston, son of Theodore and Cecil (Hutchins) Perkins. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1940, serving as an infantryman in the Pacific Theatre. He was at Schofield Barracks when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. John saw front-line action in the Philippines and suffered a serious wound. He was honored with several awards including the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. John was discharged at the rank of private first class in April 1946. John was a carpenter by trade, but spent most of his later years tending his forestry growth, which was his pride and passion. He is survived by two sisters, Beverly Robshaw of Orland and Jean O’Quinn of Arlington, Mass. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Edward and William Perkins; and two sisters, Ruth Kilroy and Dorothy Perkins. John’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to all his caregivers, the doctors and nurses at St. Joseph Hospital for their tremendous support, their care and their compassion, not only to John, but to his family as well; and to the Rev. Linda Smith for her devotion, thoughts and prayers during this journey. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the family cemetery in Penobscot. Time and date will be announced at a later time.
