LEE, N.H. – Valmore A. Clifford, 85, passed away peacefully March 11, 2010, in Lee, N.H. Born Aug. 12, 1924, in Old Town, he was the son of Arthur and Ida (Brodeur) Clifford. He enlisted in the Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He earned the rank of chief petty officer at the time of his honorable discharge after serving for more than three years. Val was a graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for 35 years at Union Carbide Corp., starting as a mechanical engineer and retiring as head of plant engineering. In 1960 he married Josephine “Joan” (Saul); she passed away in 2005. He was a devoted and active member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis Parish, Bennington, Vt. Upon moving to New Hampshire in 2006, he was a devoted member of Saint Thomas More Parish, Durham. Survivors include his two sisters, Alta Zinchuk and her husband, Walter, and Helen Blumenstock and her husband, Marvin “Bud”; two brothers, James Clifford and Paul Clifford and his wife, Sally; two daughters, Maura Slavin and her husband, Mike, and Eileen Clifford; a son, Patrick Clifford and his wife, Kathy; and seven grandchildren, Eileen, Marina, Siobhan, Danielle, Kaleigh, Nicole and Brianne. Visiting hours were held 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, N.H. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, March 15, at Church of St. Thomas More, Madbury Road, Durham, N.H. Graveside services with military honors will take place in the spring at Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington, Vt.
