PRINCETON, Mass. – Alan Fraser Howe, son of the late Wallace and Esther Howe, died April 23, 2010. He was born March 21, 1926. Alan graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he was the captain of the tennis team. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed in the South Pacific. Alan retired from Norton Co., Worcester, Mass.; he was employed there for 37 years. He and his friend, Marshall Greene built 30 tennis courts in Massachusetts. Al also built three tennis courts on Swans Island for his family. He was very active in the Worcester Peewee League. He was a founder of Pine Hill Tennis Club and on the Labor Day Tennis Committee for 32 years. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ellen McCarthy Howe; his sister, Carol Hagen; his three children, Peter Howe and his wife, Annegret, of Beaver Creek, Colo., Susan Cushing of Bellingham, Wash., and Sally Howe of Rutland, Mass.; and former wife and friend, Nancy Howe of Rutland, Mass. He is also survived by his five stepchildren, Timothy Trafton of Swans Island, Margaret Trafton and her wife, Debra Wehmeyer, of Ashburnham, Mass., Sarah Trafton of Gardner, Mass., Amy Trafton-Fitzgerald of Princeton, Mass., and Matthew Trafton of Rutland, Mass.; 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nine brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
