TROY – Jack Leavitt passed away peacefully Thursday, May 27, 2010, of natural causes. He was born April 30, 1928, in Lewiston, son of the late Frank and Ruth (Fisher) Leavitt. Jack attended Lewiston High School and graduated in the Class of 1946. He first worked at Pineland Lumber Co., Auburn, and after graduation he went to work for Darlings Auto Parts, Auburn. On Nov. 30, 1946, he married Beverly Pearl Brooker of Auburn. When Darling’s expanded to Farmington, Jack and Beverly moved there to operate the new franchise. They purchased this franchise and changed the name to Jack’s Auto Parts. Upon the sale of Jack’s Auto Parts in 1986, they moved to Dixmont and ran Leavitt’s General Store until 1991. An avid golfer, he was a member of Country View Golf Course. Legally blind, he still played and during this time, hit a hole-in-one. Along with golf, Jack enjoyed fishing, bowling and was a member of Farmington Pheasant Club and loved bird hunting. He also enjoyed playing cards and didn’t mind betting a dime on a full house. A scratch ticket was a treat and so wasn’t the daily double at Farmington, Bangor or Windsor tracks. As a father, he attended the ball games of each season, sometimes as a spectator and in the early years as a coach. As a grandfather then great-grandfather, he could still be found on the sidelines. He was predeceased by his wife, Beverly; and his brother, Leonard Leavitt. He is survived by his sister, Evelyn Tuttle of Lewiston; two sisters-in-law, Lois Leavitt of Auburn and Donna Riggs of Waterville; three sons, Michael and his wife, Terri, and their daughter, Renatta of Chelmsford, Mass., David and his wife, Paula, of Troy and their children, Jennifer, Lori, Sam and Jacquelyn, and Andrew and his wife, Sheila, of New Vineyard and their sons, Daniel, Jonathan and Jason; seven great-grandchildren; and several very special nieces and nephews. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Unity Centre for the Performing Arts building, 42 Depot St., Unity. Those who wish may make a contribution in Jack’s memory to the Beverly and Jack Leavitt Fund for Children’s Sports, care of treasurer, town of Troy, 129 Rogers Road, Troy, ME 04987-3501.
