BANGOR and INVERNESS, Fla. – Malcolm “Red” “Mac” Kitchen, 77, of Inverness, Fla., passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010, at Citrus County Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer with his loving wife, Arcangela, by his side. He was born June 13, 1932, in Bangor, son of Lewis Kitchen and Bessie (Tripp) Kitchen Sargent. Mac attended Bangor schools and graduated from Bangor High School in 1952. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the 10th Armored Alpine Division in Austria and Germany, as a winter survival instructor. While stationed in Austria, he competed against the U.S. Olympic downhill ski team in their Olympic training trials. He was representing the U.S. Army and came in fourth overall. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and returned to Bangor to attend Husson College – now Husson University. He graduated in 1959. After graduation he joined Sears in the manager trainee program and became a Sears store manager in several stores in Maine and New York. He remained in the retail business in Florida until he retired. He had many hobbies: golf, woodworking, arm-chair hockey and baseball, and always enjoyed a good game of cribbage. He was a good father, husband and friend, and will be greatly missed by the lives he touched. Mac leaves his loving wife of 36 years, Angie. He is also survived by three children from a previous marriage: sons, Mark Kitchen of Belfast, Master Sgt. Alan Kitchen and wife, Rachel, of Fort Gordon, Ga., and daughter, Karen and husband, Philip Lyles, of New York City; a sister, Dorothy and husband, Bill Clark, of Brewer; an aunt, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.
