BELFAST – Merritt G. “Gil” Gilmer, 90, formerly of Northport, N.Y., died June 14, 2010, at Waldo County General Hospital. He was born Nov. 18, 1919, in Greens Fork, Ind., the son of John and Avis (Veal) Gilmer. Merritt served as a U.S. Navy lieutenant in World War II and after the war in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was a teacher and school librarian, an avid reader, gardener, sports fan and environmentalist. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Claramartha, in 2008. He is survived by children, Debbie Gilmer of Orono, Diane and Dan Maurais of Livermore, John and Lisa Gilmer of York and Robert Gilmer and Rene Orduna of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Amanda Maurais, Bryan Maurais and Allison Gilmer; and great-grandson, Nolan Painter. Friends may call 1-3 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Interment will be held afterward at Grove Cemetery, Belfast.
