CARMEL – Shady Blackwell, 88, died June 29, 2010. He was born in 1921, in Abbingdon, Va., the son of John H. and Pearl A. (Farmer) Blackwell. Shady grew up in Virginia and was a veteran of World War II during the Normandy invasion, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked as a cook in the military and later worked for the state of Maine, constructing bridges. He also worked for Bangor & Aroostook Railroad as a car knocker. Shady was a member of Argonne Post No. 138; American Legion; Winterport and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to garden, hunt and fish. He was acknowledged in Don Colson’s book about Maine World War II veterans, “Quiet Courage.” Surviving are six children, Mary Perry and her husband, Frank, of Carmel, David Blackwell and his wife, Gudrun, of Bangor, Diane Tozier and Linda Campbell, both of Bangor, Daniel Blackwell and his wife, Melba, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Rebecca Foley and her husband, James, of Winterport; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, three sisters all of Virginia; and two daughters-in-law, Janet and Stacy Blackwell. He will be remembered by dear friends, John Trott and Laurel Johnson. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (McPherson) Blackwell; and two children, Shady Blackwell Jr. and John Blackwell. Family and friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, where a service honoring his life will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, with the Rev. Patricia Moore, presiding. Burial with military honors will be at Highland Cemetery, Carmel.
