AUGUSTA – Robert Wells, 79, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, after a long illness. Bob was born June 7, 1931, in Watertown, Mass., the son of James and Gladys Wells. After his baptism as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1950, his main interest was sharing the Bible’s message with others and helping them to have a hope for the future. In 1957 he moved to Maine to pursue the full-time ministry in Washington County. After moving to Augusta in 1959, Bob worked for Parker Danner Co. and later for Cormier Equipment, Oakland, but his main activity was still Bible education and helping others to gain a good relationship with God. In 1983 he became actively involved in the Maine Regional Building Committee assisting in organizing the building and renovating of more than 70 places of worship for Jehovah’s Witnesses in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Also for many years he was frequently a speaker at conventions. Through these activities he gained a wide circle of friends who will miss him very much. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Gladys Wells. Bob is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis; his sister, Carolyn Matthews and her husband, James, of Bonita Springs, Fla.; as well as a niece, Brenda; and nephew, Scott, who also live in Florida. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the north wing of Augusta Civic Center.
