GLENBURN – LoAnn Smith, 60, loving wife of Richard F. “Dick” Smith, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 2010, surrounded by her family at home after a brief but courageous battle with mesothelioma. She was born Dec. 4, 1949, in Lewiston, to Carroll F. and Wilhelmina (Bansmer) Hall. Affectionately called “Lo” or “LoLo,” LoAnn graduated from Bangor High School in 1968 and worked for many years at the Bangor Daily News. She was employed as a secretary at Eastern Maine Medical Center, first at the Diabetes, Endocrine and Nutrition Center, and most recently at Orthopaedic Surgery of Maine, until ill health forced her to retire. She and her husband own and operate Glenburn Gardens, Glenburn, where she would treat each customer like family. She was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where every Fall Festival she would bake her much sought after gingerbread men cookies and delicious homemade pickles. She was happiest when she was in her sewing room making a quilt for a loved one or when she was making memories with her children and grandchildren. She loved the holidays and would decorate every room in her house that was so warm and inviting. LoAnn had the most sweet and generous nature and would always look for the good in everyone. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Richard F. “Dick” Smith of Glenburn; and her children who surrounded her with their love, James and Stacy Green of Etna, Debbie and Mike Moody of Monroe, Jim and Jodi Smith of Brewer and Cathy Smith of Kittery. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, who gave her such joy, Devan and Troy Moody, Travis Smith, Hannah Smith and Jimmy Green. LoAnn also leaves behind her sister and best friend, Patricia Barker and husband, Virgil, of Bangor; and her brother, Gary Hall and wife, Rebecca, of Waldoboro. Auntie LoLo will be greatly missed by her three nieces and nephew, her many cousins and by her many circle of co-workers and friends. LoAnn was predeceased by her parents, and much loved aunts and uncles. The family especially thanks two special nurses, Becky Caron and Dolly Chesley, whom LoAnn called her “angel nurses,” for being with the family on this journey and giving us hugs whenever we needed them. Also deep gratitude to all the wonderful people at Bangor Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice of Eastern Maine for helping us to care for our loved one at home. A celebration of LoAnn’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 540 Essex St., Bangor, with Pastor Elaine Hewes presiding. LoAnn requests that you wear “a splash of color” to the service. Always helping out those in most need, LoAnn’s final wish is that donations in her memory be made to Bangor Humane Society, 693B Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401 or during this holiday season purchase an Angel Tree gift to brighten someone’s holiday.
