CARIBOU – William Freeman Bishop, 94, died Dec. 25, 2010, in Caribou. He was born June 3, 1916, in Caribou, son of the late Walter Freeman and Mina Lillian (Roberts) Bishop. He attended Caribou schools and the University of Maine, Orono. During World War II Bill ran Gahagan’s gas station on the corner of High Street and Main Street in Caribou. He was a member of the Rotary Club for several years and the Lion’s Club for 40 years, including two years of serving as president. His wife, Orize “Margie” (Chalout) Bishop, was a charter member of the Lioness Club. Bill served as chairman of the town budget committee. He was co-owner of Roberts and Nichols potato and cattle farms with his father and brother. He was a rural carrier for the U.S. postal system for 40 years. Bill loved hunting, fishing and canoeing with his family and friends. He was a registered Maine guide for many years and guided many out of state sportsmen up the Allagash River with his close friend, Judson Cameron. He loved to travel worldwide with his wife, Orize, in his retirement. Bill was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Annetta Reed; and his wife of 61 years, Orize. A dry and witty story-teller and wonderful friend, he will be dearly missed by his brother, Robert E. Bishop of Belfast; his nieces, Noreen Michaud of Fort Myers, Fla., Nancy Bishop Tracy of Brewer, Carol Bishop Spinney and husband, Gary, of Rockport and Paula Reed Leavitt of Shapleigh; his nephew, David Reed and wife, Julie, of Holden; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Kristi Spinney Todd and husband, Jared, of Rockport, Jenifer Spinney Mason and husband, Levi, of Waldoboro and Ben Leavitt of New Hampshire; and three great-great-nephews. Very special people in Bill’s life were Gary Cameron of Caribou, and Tammy, David and Robert Deschesne of Presque Isle. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Mocker Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30.
