HARRINGTON – Irvin F. Strout, 77, went to be with his Lord and Savior Feb. 6, 2011, surrounded by his loving family in the Hospice and Palliative Care Unit at Togus VA Medical Center. He was son of the late Winslow and Gladys (Grant) Strout.
Irvin served in the U.S. Army and was self-employed for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family at his camp on Schoodic Lake, and watching his son and grandchildren play basketball. Irvin was a member for 54 years of First Baptist Church, Harrington, where he served as a trustee and usher for many years. He will be fondly remembered by his family for his sense of humor, love of life and enthusiasm for singing. His favorite hymn was the Old Rugged Cross, and he frequently recited the Lord’s Prayer.
Irvin is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Laura Fickett Strout, whose outstanding devotion and unselfish commitment in caring for him through many years of illness inspired us all. Also surviving are a son, Joel Strout and wife, Cathy, of Harrington; a daughter, Pamela Barbee and husband, Kevin, of Cherryfield; eight grandchildren, Candace, Sarah, Jason and Joshua Strout and his fiancee, Courtney Foss, all of Harrington, Jennifer Strout and her boyfriend, Joe Baroletti, of Watertown, Mass., Coley and Missy Barbee of Boston and Annie Barbee and her fiance, George Bamford III, of Harrington; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Gagne and husband, Frederick, of Mechanic Falls; brother, Richard Strout and wife, Gweneth, of Harrington; sister, Jenny Ganiel and husband, Carl; a special aunt, Joanna Strout of Milbridge; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Strout and wife, Norita, of Harrington. The family thanks Lillian Robinson who helped care for Irvin in his home for the last three years, and all of those who lovingly and compassionately helped care for Irvin in his last days in the Alzheimer’s Unit and the Hospice and Palliative Care Unit at Togus VA Medical Center.
