ADDISON – Leander B. Wass, 84, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at Sunrise Care Facility, Jonesport. He was born April 16, 1926, in Addison, son of the late Lewis Andrew and Susie (Bradford) Wass.

Leander was a direct descendant of William Bradford who came over on the Mayflower and was governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Navy. He worked for the Maine Department of Transportation as a truck driver and road crew worker. Leander was also a retired blueberry farmer. He was a longtime member of Indian River Grange, a member of the Masonic Order and former member of Pleasant River Historical Society. Leander loved people and enjoyed talking with them whenever he had the opportunity. His favorite pastime was working on his blueberry land. He and his wife, Clara, enjoyed square dancing with friends throughout Washington County. A lifelong dream was realized when he and Clara were able to spend winters in Florida.

He was predeceased by his wife, Clara (Flaherty) Wass, who died Nov. 23, 2007. He is survived by three nephews,

Dale W. Tenney of Milbridge, David A. Tenney and wife, Jessie R., of Lancaster, Pa., and Paul L. Tenney of Columbia Falls; and a sister-in-law, Lilla Flaherty of Jonesport.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias, with the Rev. George Woodward officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Centerville Cemetery Society, care of Linda Smith, P.O. Box 22, Jonesboro, ME 04648.
