BUZZARDS BAY, MASS. — Sarah Pavento of Orono pitched a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts as Thomas College defeated Massachusetts Maritime 11-0 in the first game of a Sunday softball doubleheader, and the Terriers completed the sweep with a 12-3 win in the second game at Rollins Field.
In the first game, Samantha Robinson and Samantha Moore each hit two-run singles to spark a seven-run third inning for the 6-6 Terriers.
In the second game, Lindsay Fry hit a two-run triple to highlight an eight-run third inning for Thomas. Sarah Estes of Brewer hit a two-run double and a two-run single while Mallorie Blakney of Fairfield added three singles. Pavento pitched a four-hitter for another win.
The Mass Maritime Buccaneers fall to 0-3 overall.

USM wins two, drops two

At Clermont, Fla., the University of Southern Maine rallied to score six runs in the seventh inning en route to victory over Union College 9-7 in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.
The Huskies dropped Saturday’s second game to Washington and Jefferson College 10-2. On Sunday, the Huskies lost to Wellesley College 2-0 before winning the second game over Lawrence University 12-4.
In Saturday’s first game, Sarah Deroche led the Huskies with two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Stefanie Stockwell posted three singles and an RBI while Annie Mitchell had a double, a single and an RBI. Kayla Ferrara and Anna Allard each added two singles and two RBIs.
In Saturday’s second game, Victoria Doerschner helped propel Washington and Jefferson with three hits and three RBIs.
Ferrara paced Southern Maine with two singles and an RBI. Allard chipped in with an RBI single.
In Sunday’s first game, Sarah Schwartzmeyer pitched a two-hit shutout to earn the win for Wellesley.
Deroche pitched a complete game for the Huskies giving up two runs on four hits.
In Sunday’s second game, Katie Davis hit a home run, three singles and drove in four runs for USM. Erin Swarbrick posted two singles and three RBIs while Ferrara chipped in with a double, a single and an RBI.

Saint Joseph’s splits

At Fort Myers, Fla., Alyssa Dunn hit three singles and knocked in a run as Saint Joseph’s College topped College of Wooster 3-1 in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh defeated the Monks in the second game 3-0.
In the first game, Lindsay Moore singled twice and drove in a run for the Monks. Danyelle Shufelt posted three singles and a run scored while Emily Leverone chipped in with an RBI single.
In the second game, Courtney Wautier pitched a three-hit shutout to earn the win for Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Connie Grovo, Shufelt and Lindsay Moore each singled for Saint Joseph’s.

Thomas splits with Johnson&Wales

At East Providence, R.I., Thomas College won the first game of a season-opening doubleheader Sunday 5-1 against Johnson & Wales University, but JWU rallied in the second to edge the Terriers 8-7.
In the first game, the Terriers broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth with an RBI single by Michael Busa and added two insurance runs in the seventh. Ben Goodall paced Thomas with two singles and one RBI. Eric Sucy notched the win on the mound after going all seven innings and giving up two runs on nine hits.
In the second game, Thomas took a 4-1 lead in the fourth, but JWU cut the lead to one run in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Nick Alosco, and then went up 6-4 in the fifth. Thomas answered with a three-run double by Rob Nutter in the sixth.
JWU tied it at 7-7 in the same inning as Zach Boyes reached on a single and came all the way around to score via a steal and a wild pitch, and freshman Jake Dickerson scored the winning run on a passed ball later in the inning.
Thomas loaded the bases in the seventh, but Chris DePalma made a great fielding play to earn the save.
Nutter led the Terriers with a double and two singles.
Matt Yaeger had two singles and an RBI while Boyes had two singles as well for JWU.

Amherst 13, USM 7

At Auburndale, Fla., Amherst College rallied with six runs in the seventh inning en route to victory over the University of Southern Maine Saturday.
Four Amherst players notched three hits apiece as part of the 18-hit attack.
Josh Mackey led the Huskies with three singles and two RBIs. Anthony Pisani chipped in with a double and two singles while Jordan Berthiaume added an RBI double.

Colby, Luther split

At Fort Myers, Fla., Nate Ellis drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Colby College topped Luther College 5-4 in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader.
The Mules dropped the first game to Luther 6-2.
In the first game, Luther tallied four runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Colby’s Dom Morrill had four strikeouts and no walks in the loss.
In the second game, Nieuw reached base on a two-out double in the eighth and later scored on Ellis’ hit. Brendan Gallagher chipped in with two singles.

Bowdoin wins two

At Winter Haven, Fla., Bowdoin College extended its winning streak to six games with wins over Edgewood College and Ramapo College Saturday.
The Polar Bears defeted Edgewood 6-2 in the first game and topped Ramapo 6-4 in the second.
In the first game, Matt Ruane led Bowdoin with two singles, a double, two runs and an RBI. Jordan Edgett chipped in with a double, a single and an RBI.
In the second game, Ruane tallied two singles, a double and two runs scored to pace the Polar Bears. Dan Findley registered two singles, two runs and two RBIs.

UMPI 19, Penn-Worthington 0

At Dunmore, Pa., Jordan Perry pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks as the University of Maine-Presque Isle cruised past Penn State-Worthington in seven innings Sunday.
Carlos Villoira led the Owls with two singles, a double and an RBI. Stephen Thorne posted three singles while Seth Cote knocked in four runs on two singles. Brian Andrews and Matt Nadeau added two singles apiece.

USM sweeps Trinity

At Winter Haven, Fla., Chris Bernard pitched a two-hit shutout with no walks to lead the University of Southern Maine by Trinity College 1-0 in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader.
The Huskies topped Trinity in the second game 6-2.
In the first game, Southern Maine notched the game’s only run in the fourth inning. Forrest Chadwick led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Eaton.
In the second game, Lucas Marks led the Huskies’ 10-hit attack with two singles and two RBIs. Anthony Pisani and Bernard added two singles apiece.
