CAMDEN – Alexander “Sandy” James MacKimm, 82, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at Harbor Hill, Belfast. Born Sept. 27, 1928, in Chicago, he was the son of James I. and Gertrude (Dartt) MacKimm.

He graduated from Morgan Park Military Academy, Chicago, and University of Illinois, where he graduated with a degree in agriculture. He also took executive level courses at Syracuse University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology later in his career. During the Korean War, Sandy served in the U.S. Navy, where he flew a Martin P5M aircraft, which were known as patrol flying boats. While stationed in Bermuda, Sandy met Mary Lou Davis, a registered nurse who was employed at the local hospital in Hamilton, Bermuda. They were married Dec. 14, 1953, in Washington, D.C., and moved to Chicago to start their family. Sandy worked at MacKimm Brothers, a meat purveyor company owned by his family. In the mid-1950s Sandy went to work for Nalco Chemical Co., where he spent the next 30-plus years before retiring in 1986 as a division president and sales executive. During his career his family was transferred from Chicago to Maine and Massachusetts. It was during those years in New England that Sandy and his family established a deep fondness for Maine. For many years the MacKimm family enjoyed spending summer months at their cottage on Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes Region. After he retired, Sandy and his wife moved from Barrington, Ill., to Camden, where they have spent the past 25 years.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou MacKimm of Camden; five children, Melissa A. MacKimm and her husband, Randy Bozarth, of Lovettsville, Va., James I. MacKimm and his wife, Suzanne, of Windham, N.H., Mark D. MacKimm and his wife, Belinda, of Rome, Ga., Megan M. Captain and her husband, Reed, of Barrington, Ill., and Elizabeth A. Shee and her husband, Bradley, of Liberty, Mo.; five grandchildren, Jessica MacKimm, Douglas MacKimm, Allie MacKimm, Luke Captain and Lauren Captain; and a brother-in-law, James Rodgers and his wife, Sue, of Altoona, Pa. He was predeceased by two sisters, Jane Faucette and Barbara McCarthy.

A memorial service, with a reception after, will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at John Street United Methodist Church, Camden.
