CARMEL – Richard “Dick” Waning, 68, died April 12, 2011, at a Florida hospital, from a very short and unexpected illness of lung cancer. He was born Jan. 15, 1943, in Dixmont, the son of Earl and Mary (Murphy) Waning.

Dick was a true family man, devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather. He graduated from Carmel High School, worked in several shoe shops, was foreman at Bendy Shoe and then bought Carmel Exxon, rebuilding and renaming it to Dick’s Mini Mart, which became a family business for 29 years. Dick loved his business and his many customers, and was able to semi-retire, five years ago, thanks to his daughter, Bobbi, running the store while he wintered in Florida. He loved the game of golf and his many special golfing friends.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Tracey (Richardson) Waning; his son, Rickie Waning and his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Bobbi and her husband, Michael Estes, and Kelley Woodard, all of Carmel; five grandchildren, Jared and Matthew Sawyer, Christopher Woodard, Alexander and Olivia Estes; several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Melvin Waning.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 22, with Pastor Barbara Chodkowski, pastor of Carmel Union Congregational Church, officiating.
