LUBEC – Raymond Albert Basley Sr., 83, died April 14, 2011, at an Ellsworth hospital, after a short illness. He was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Lubec, the son of Willis and Delia (Pike) Basley.
He was a graduate of Lubec High School, Class of 1946. He then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. After his service he went to work for Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut as a jet engineer, retiring after 30-plus years of employment. He was a member of Washington Lodge No. 37 AF & AM, Lubec; a lifetime member of Center Lodge No. 97, Meriden, Conn.; and a member of Ancient York Lodge No. 155, Lisbon. He was also a member of West Lubec Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Raymond A. Basley Jr. and Kenneth and his wife, Beverly; four grandchildren, Ray III, Jamie, Ann Marie Moquin and her husband, Tony, and Melissa; five great-grandchildren, Ray IV, Dylan, Daniel, Kenneth and Haley; and two special nephews, David and Peter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Muriel E. Davis; a brother, Arthur; and a sister, Phyllis Ingalls.
Memorial services, including Masonic services, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at West Lubec Methodist Church with Pastor Bernie Hammond officiating. Burial with military honors will be after at Greenlawn Cemetery, Lubec. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to Shriners Hospitals, care of Anah Shrine, P.O. Box 735, Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Machias and Lubec.
