HERMON – Maxine Alice Hartley, 68, died unexpectedly April 23, 2011, at her home. Maxine was born May 21, 1942, in Howland, daughter of Joseph A. and Edith A. (Drake) Umbro.
Maxine went to Howland High School, Class of 1961. Then she met her lifelong love and companion, Chuck, at a roller rink. She became a devoted wife and loving mother. Maxine enjoyed the camp in Lincoln, playing card games, poker and crocheting for everyone.
Maxine is survived by her son, Charles “Tiger” and his wife, Sherry, of Hermon; adopted daughter, Shelley Babcock of Winterport; three grandchildren, Kevin, Ashley and Dylan; one brother, Joe Umbro of Connecticut; three sisters, Theresa Casey of Connecticut, Mary Raymond of Florida and Catherine “Rena” Sawyer and husband, Maynard, of West Enfield; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Umbro of New Jersey and Rita Umbro of Lincoln; many special nieces, nephews and loving family members of the Hartley family. Maxine was also grateful for all her amazing friends. She was known as “Nana Maxine” to many children that she loved dearly. Maxine was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Chuck; brothers, Sonny and Stubby; sister, Pauline; brothers-in-law, Gene, Pete and Stanley; and sister-in-law, Joyce.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. April 29 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Union Street, Hermon, with a gathering immediately after at the family home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be sent to help with funeral expenses, care of the Hartley family, 690 Blackstream Road, Hermon, ME 04401.
