BANGOR – John B. Cahoon, 72, passed away May 13, 2011, in Bangor. He was born March 15, 1939, in Edmonston, New Brunswick, the son of John and Catherine (McDermott) Cahoon.
He graduated from Madawaska High School and University of Maine with a degree in forestry. He served in the U.S. Army. John was self-employed as a land surveyor in Maine and worked closely with Mary Gregor of Houlton for the past 30 years. In his younger days, he was a small plane pilot. He supported Landowner’s Property Rights of Maine, was a member of American Legion, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, the former Atlantic Salmon Association, Maine Land Surveyors Association, American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, New England Section of American Congress Surveying and Mapping and the Society of American Foresters. John was an avid sportsman, hunter and fisherman. He was a highly skilled decoy carver. John was a gentle giant of a man who loved his family and was highly respected by all who knew him.
John loved the state of Maine and fought hard for property owner’s rights.
He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Catherine Cahoon. John is survived by his beloved wife, Roberta Coltart Cahoon; his son, John Robert Cahoon; and daughter, Catherine Ann Cahoon. He will be missed by his extended family.
A celebration of John’s life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at American Legion, Post No. 147, Main Street, Madawaska. All are invited to attend. There will be a private burial at Madawaska Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to National Rifle Association Foundation, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030.
