As of Wednesday, June 1, at least 4,454 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
The figure includes nine military civilians killed in action.
At least 3,506 military personnel died as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.
The AP count is three fewer than the Defense Department’s tally, which was last updated last 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 32,102 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

— Two soldiers died May 22 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan. Killed were Sgt. 1st Class Clifford E. Beattie, 37, of Medical Lake, Wash., and Pfc. Ramon Mora Jr., 19, of Ontario, Calif.
