LEWISTON, Maine — A Boston-based company moving hundreds of jobs from India will operate out of the same complex as Spare Time Recreation at 18 Mollison Way.
Carbonite announced last week it was relocating tech-support call center jobs to Lewiston, but the company waited until Wednesday to reveal its new 20,000-square-foot location.
“We’ve been doing work up there for several weeks already,” spokesman Chris Kovach said. The company has added furniture, assembled cubicles and cut holes in the second-floor walls for more windows because, Kovach said, “natural light’s important.”
Carbonite specializes in secure online data backup. It plans to hire 50 people by the end of summer, up to 150 by the end of the year and up to 250 by the end of 2012. Kovach said the company received close to 1,000 applications in the past week.
“Our support team is in the process of evaluating them,” he said. “It’s a great number. It certainly shows a number of people are excited about working for Carbonite.”
More than 25 have been hired already, Kovach said. The company has said pay and benefits will average $35,000. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Training will begin at the new location on June 13; phones will start ringing in early July.
Company officials said they chose Lewiston for their second U.S. location because of the cluster of colleges, the fiber optics, prospects for long-term growth and the proximity to Boston.
