FRANKLIN – Eva Mae Louise (Heltzel) Hopkins died July 5, 2011, surrounded by her family at her home, after a short bout with cancer. She was born Jan. 10, 1935, in Powell, S.D., the daughter of William Kenneth and Marien Readun (Oien) Heltzel.

Her early education was at South Creek School and Kadoka High School, followed by National School of Business, Rapid City, S.D. While there she met Howe Hopkins and they married at Faith Lutheran Church, Kadoka, S.D. They were married for 56 wonderful years. Eve Mae was active in many community projects, such as Cub Scout den mother, Hancock Women’s Club, etc. She and Howe owned and operated two restaurants, Long Cove Restaurant, Sullivan, and Hoppy and Eva’s Nook, Trenton. She was an early member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bangor, and St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, where she was a charter member. Her cooking abilities were renowned throughout the area as was her ability to “take charge” of any situation.

She is survived by her husband, Howe of Franklin; sons, Hoyt Harden Hopkins and wife, Joanne, of Hancock and Kenneth Harold Hopkins of Franklin; daughter, Marien Louise Hand and husband, Jack, of Franklin; five grandchildren, Jeremy Edward Hopkins and wife, Shawna, of Ellsworth, Heath Howe Hopkins of Hancock, William Kenneth Hopkins of Ellsworth, Kurt Taylor and Kierstin Ardella Hand of Franklin; two great-grandchildren, Cydney Joy and Gavin Mick Hopkins of Ellsworth; and brother, William Kenneth Heltzel Jr. of Midland, S.D.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Leland Cemetery, Trenton. Gifts of remembrance in Eva’s memory may be made to St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 175 Downeast Highway, Ellsworth, ME 04605. Condolences may be expressed at
