BANGOR – Virginia Smith Glidden, 88, died Aug. 16, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Brewer, the daughter of Albert Lethiecq Sr. and Grace M. (Sugden) Glidden.

Virginia was a graduate of Brewer High School, Class of 1940, and Maine School of Commerce, Class of 1942. She graduated magna cum laude from Husson College. Virginia worked for the Bangor Daily News for more than 50 years, and during that time worked part time as the bookkeeper for Crescent Lumber Co. for 10 years. After retirement, she volunteered for Susan Collins office.

She is survived by a nephew, Reginald Glidden and his wife, Janice, of Orrington; two nieces, Charlotte Loew and her husband, James, of Salem, N.H., Sugene Gavrisheff and her husband, Alex, of Great Falls, Mont.; three great-nephews, Mark Glidden and his wife, Trudy, of Orrington, Burr Loew and his wife, Marianne, of Grantham, N.H., and Aaron Loew of Littleton, N.H.; four great-nieces, Melissa Spahr and her husband, Timothy, of Orrington, Jenny Loew and her fiance, Michael Machnowski, of Plaisow, N.H., Greta Gavrisheff of Los Angeles and Katie Schmidt and her husband, Ernie, of Power, Mont.; two great-great-nieces, Kierra Glidden of Orrington and Avery Loew of Grantham, N.H.; three great-great-nephews, Kyle Glidden of Orrington, Lee Spahr of Orrington and Cooper Loew of Grantham, N.H.; and several cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Albert Glidden Jr.; a sister-in-law, Arlene Glidden; two aunts, Elizabeth Crook and Elsie Carver; and an uncle, Fred Glidden.

A private graveside service will be held at Dean Hill Cemetery, Orrington. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments 3-5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
