ORONO – David Warren “Duke” Lint, beloved father and loving husband, was joined into the arms of our Lord Oct. 5, 2011. He was born June 2, 1952, in Millinocket, son of Sterling Jr. and Vivian (Haney) Lint.
David was active in his community as a pastoral and Eucharistic minister volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital and his local parish; he brought the Eucharist to shut-ins and senior housing. In the mid-1970s and mid-2000s, he was a volunteer chaperone for Christian Youth Ministry. He was active in his parish, presented workshops on protecting God’s children. He is also known as “Daffyd the Storyteller.” He loved being a ham and doing Celtic stories for the young and the old. Many times he would volunteer his services for fundraisers. He was also active in the Society for Creative Anachronism; he loved to sword fight and even taught it to others. He graduated from Stearns High School in 1971 and then went on to the University of Maine at Farmington and Orono, where he received his associate degree in criminal law enforcement and his bachelor’s degree in university studies. While in school, he worked as a park ranger at Baxter State Park for four summers. He was then employed at Eastern Maine Development District for two years and then joined the University of Maine Police Department for 26 years until he had to leave due to disability. He loved being on foot patrol, where he could interact with college students. After he left the force he was a substitute teacher for the Orono schools.
He was known as a gentle giant. His love and passion was his family and the ability to be of service to anyone, even if it was just to take a dear friend to Bangor. His house was always open to any college student that needed a place to stay, and he often shared his Thanksgiving feast with one or more students alongside his own family. He loved kayaking, but especially sailing and even built his own sailboat. He loved Celtic, Irish and naval history and was extremely knowledgeable about both. He was a Knight of Columbus fourth degree in Old Town, and enjoyed brewing his own beer. Duke will be forever remembered for his sense of humor, which was occasionally appropriate.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38-plus years, Claire (Lacombe) Lint, originally of Lewiston; and his children: Andrew, his best buddy and fellow lover of puns and other banting; daddy’s little girl, Marie LaFreniere and her husband, Luke, of New Durham, N.H.; his history and sailing buddy, Mathew of Orono and significant other, Brandy Goodrich; and Kristoffer of Lewiston, computer and sci-fi partner; brother, Paul Lint of Massachusetts; brother-in-law, Paul Lacombe of Lewiston; a very dear “adopted” sister, Alice Lewis of Gray; an “adopted” brother, Tony Plante and his family of Windham; several nieces and nephews, a great-niece; his buddy, Gus Bombard of Stillwater; and the furry members of the family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, JoAnne; brother, Johnie; brother, Pat; and sister, Mary Ellen.
A visitation will be held 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, with a Knights of Columbus prayer service 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town.
