ORONO – Frank Howard Barnes, 82, died peacefully Oct. 25, 2011, at his home. Frank was born in 1929, in Philadelphia, the only child of Francis Joseph Barnes and Ellen (Dickson).

He was married to Mimi (Mills), his loyal and loving companion, for 53 years. Frank served in the Army before earning a communications degree from Boston University in 1959. He worked faithfully and well in a variety of public relations positions in Rhode Island and Connecticut to support his family, leaving the corporate world in 1989 to open and run a campground store with Mimi on Mount Desert Island. Frank shared a love of Maine with his family and friends, and lived happily in their log house in Somesville for 15 years before moving to Orono in 2009. He will be remembered for his humble personality and quick wit along with his unsinkable belief in the Boston Red Sox and his love of all things Swiss.

Frank is survived by his wife, Mimi; daughter, Shirley and her husband, Joe Beuth, and their three children, Pete, Josh and Monica; daughter, Leslie and her husband, Mark Harris, and their daughter, Laura; and his only son, Dave and his wife, Michelle, and their three children, Charley, Dixie and Ridge. He is deeply loved and will be truly missed by all his family.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Southwest Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank’s name to Hospice of Eastern Maine at www.easternmainehomecare.org or EMHC Healthcare Charities, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931.
