FRANKLIN, Ga., and ELLSWORTH – Gregory A. Carter, 54, passed away Oct. 28, 2011, at his residence in Georgia, with his constant canine companion, Howie, by his side. He was born July 1, 1957, in Bar Harbor, son of Daniel and Edrie (Turner) Carter.
A 1976 graduate of Ellsworth High School, Greg attended the University of Maine, Orono, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he was a petty officer aboard the USS Swordfish – SSN-579, serving as a nuclear reactor operator. Upon retiring from the Navy, Greg opened his own photography shop, The Whale Song, before moving to Georgia to pursue a career in helping and educating children of special needs. Greg loved to fish and spent many hours on the ice or the water of Toddy Pond in the early morning hours. Greg had an especially green thumb and immensely enjoyed gardening. Greg had a special affinity toward animals and tried to be surrounded by them.
He was predeceased by his mother and father. Greg is survived by his sister and best friend, Joyce MacIlroy and husband, Gregg, of Glenburn; three brothers, Vasco “Buster” and wife, Linda, of Ellsworth, Timothy and wife, Bonnie, of Princeton and Daniel “Butch” Jr. and wife, Dawn, of Ellsworth; several nieces, a nephew; and the special lady of his life, Dianna Wallen Barnes of Franklin, Ga.
A celebration of life and memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at American Legion Hall Post 207, Trenton, with the Revs. Arthur and Suzie Gowie officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Greg’s name be made to a local animal shelter of choice.
