ORONO – Edward A. Ludwig, 89, formerly of Washington, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at Dirigo Pines, Orono. He was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Washington, to Frederick and Ina Clary Ludwig.
He grew up in Washington and graduated from Washington High School. After high school he worked in a Portland shipyard. He was drafted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He married Marjorie Turner Dec. 8, 1945. Ed and Marjorie moved back to Washington to run the family store, F.L. Ludwig & Son, “the oldest business in town,” which they ran together until 1973. Edward also became a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in 1953 and postmaster in 1961 until his retirement. Ed and Marjory spent 10 years of their retirement in Silver Springs, Fla. Edward was very community-minded. He belonged to Washington Fire Department, Evening Star Grange and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a past master of Mount Olivet Masonic Lodge, founding member of Washington Hill and Gully Riders Snowmobile Club, deputy sheriff and barbershop singer. Family was very important to Edward. All work was valuable to him whether it was tending to his large gardens, playing cribbage, working in the store or helping the community – he always gave 110 percent.
He was predeceased by his parents, four siblings; and stepmother, Gertrude Ludwig. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Ludwig of Orono; daughters, Valerie Griffin and her husband, Michael Griffin, of Orono and Joanne Shuman and her husband, Timothy, of Jefferson; son, Michael Ludwig and his wife, Amy, of Bangor; and grandchildren, Nicholaus Shuman of Biddeford, Joshua Griffin and his wife, Susan, of Bangor, Lyndsy Shuman of Orono, Kate Ludwig of Philadelphia and Benjamin Ludwig of Biddeford.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, where the funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. A reception will be held 12:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olivet Masonic Lodge, Washington. A committal service with military honors will be held at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
